Lana Čmajčanin (BiH) – Once We Were Brothers

Once We Were Brothers starts from ideological phenomena shaped through the oftenused
metaphor of brotherhood and from visual pattern influenced by an emerging NAM modernity of the
60s and those social, political and cultural metaphors and pattern through time lost their ideological
meanings of solidarity and freedom, becoming new neocolonial signifiers of the third world which today
survives wars, oppression, exploitation, migration, terror, crises and much more.

Lana Čmajčanin born in Sarajevo, based in Vienna where she is a PhD scholar at the Academy of
Fine Arts Vienna. Her work is mainly concerned with the impact of political and social power structures
and control mechanisms on our existence and it is questioning the issues of responsibility and
manipulation. My practice reflects the interweaving of different media and encompasses installations,
video works, performances and sound installations, photography and media art.
